Course Description

This three-day course is intended for personnel with previous small boat handling experience wishing to improve and adapt their skills for fast rescue boat operations. This course is a combination of classroom lecture and underway practical exercises.

Expected Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Maintain the fast rescue boat for operations
• Prepare fast rescue boat and crew for operations
• Take charge of a fast rescue boat during and after launch
• Respond to FRB, equipment and crew emergencies or malfunctions
• Locate and retrieve casualties; and
• Recover the fast rescue boat

Admission

There are no pre-requisites for this course, however to receive an additional STCW USCG approved certificate, participants must:

• Hold a Certificate for Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, or a
• Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft, or a
• Lifeboatman Certificate;
• Be 18 years of age or older and in overall good health;
• Be medically fit to undertake the practical exercises of the course.

Every effort will be made to provide as much attention as possible to individual student needs. Class enrollment varies from 6 to 18 depending on the time of year. The usual student/instructor ratio for rescue boat handling is 6 to 1.

Entry Requirements

Participants must be fit to undertake the physical components of the training and will be asked to sign a medical declaration upon registration.

Attendance Requirements

A student must attend 100% of the program. This requirement is strictly adhered to regardless of whether the absence is excused or unexcused.

Class Schedule

Classes meet daily, Monday through Wednesday from 0800 to 1700. Additional class time may be added as needed. Lunch is from 1200 to 1300.

Grading Policy

Tests & Examinations

A final written examination will be given on the last day of class. A passing grade of 70% is required to receive a certificate.

Practical Assessments

Practical assessments consist of the required tasks outlined in STCW 96 Regulation VI/2 Paragraph 1.A. The instructor will demonstrate the required competencies then the students will have an opportunity to practice before the assessments will be conducted. These assessments are pass/fail.

Students’ Responsibility

Students are required to observe proper standards of personal conduct. Personal protective equipment including lifejackets will be provided but you will be required to bring warm clothing to wear while underway. A change of clothes is also recommended.

Certification

Successfully passing the written exam and practical assessments will qualify the graduate as certified for Operator of Fast Rescue Boats. A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the assessment. The certificate will show the graduate is in compliance with Coast Guard standards and the guidelines of Table A-VI/2-2 of the STCW Code as required by 46 CFR 12.617(b) every 5 years.
