This one-day course is one of the mandatory STCW basic safety training courses designed to meet the minimum requirement for familiarisation and basic safety training for seafarers with designated emergency duties.
What you'll learn
The course teaches basic first aid and life-saving skills and emphasis is placed on practical work during training. Upon completion of training, you are expected to achieve the following:
- understand what to do in case of an accident or medical emergency on board.
- be able to apply elementary first aid techniques.
You will be assessed throughout the course by direct observation, simulation and role play. Additional time is allocated at the end of the programme for anyone who requires remedial support to achieve competence. Criteria for assessment of competence are included in the course notes.
On successful completion students receive a Proficiency in Elementary First Aid certificate.
The course is also included in our STCW Basic Safety Training Week (https://maritime.solent.ac.uk/courses/stcw-safety-and-security/stcw-basic-safety-training-week).
First aid refresher training
Though not mandatory, many individuals choose to repeat first aid training periodically as a way to refresh their skills. This course is ideal for those who wish to keep their first aid skills and knowledge up to date, allowing seafarers to remain competent at applying basic life saving techniques and to understand what to do in an emergency situation.
