Lithium-ion Battery Safety on Ships - Fully Online

Lithium-ion batteries are becoming increasingly common on ships, powering everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles. While they offer many benefits, these batteries can also present significant dangers if handled improperly.

About the Course
As the number of fires on ships attributed to lithium-ion batteries continue to rise, understanding the associated risks and hazards is crucial for the safety of vessels at sea, and the well-being of crew and passengers. The fully online “Lithium-Ion Battery Safety on Ships” course is designed to equip maritime professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to mitigate these risks and ensure safe operations. This course is developed in partnership with Mariner House, led by renowned maritime author Captain Gerard Pollock, a master mariner with over 25 years of experience in shipping, Port State Control (PSC), and maritime operations.

Target Audience
This essential course is ideal for ship crew, captains, safety officers, emergency response teams, and shoreside managers who interact with lithium-ion batteries in the maritime environment. Whether you use battery-powered equipment, oversee charging operations, or provide leadership in implementing safety procedures, this course is for you.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify at least five common locations where lithium-ion batteries are found on ships.
  • Explain the basic functional processes of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Recognize battery abuse conditions and at least three types of hazardous battery defects.
  • Describe the characteristics of toxic and explosive gases emitted from lithium-ion batteries.
  • Understand the hazards of thermal runaway and appropriate responses to battery fires.
  • Evaluate the suitability of water-based fire suppression systems for lithium-ion battery fires.
  • Identify at least two types of specialist equipment for containing and suppressing lithium-ion battery fires.

Compliance and Regulatory Alignment
The course aligns with key maritime regulations and requirements, including:

  1. ISM Code 6.3: Ensures proper familiarization with duties, particularly for those in safety and environmental roles, by offering comprehensive lithium-ion battery safety training.
  2. ISM Code 6.5: Provides necessary training to support safety management systems, with in-depth insights into lithium-ion battery safety.
  3. STCW Convention Regulation I/14 – 5 Compliance

Familiarises seafarers with their duties, ship arrangements, equipment, and relevant procedures, enhancing crew competency in line with the STCW Convention.

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly common on ships, powering everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and cargo. While they offer numerous benefits, these batteries can also present significant dangers if handled improperly.

Insurance Implications
Insurance underwriters may reject claims related to fires involving Lithium-Ion Batteries, particularly when improper charging, handling, or storage is suspected. The course addresses this concern by ensuring crew are well-trained in preventing and responding to battery-related emergencies.
