This five-day course provides delegates with the essential education and training needed to keep a safe navigational watch and to use radar, electronic charts, automatic plotting aids, and other electronic aids to safely navigate small vessels.

It is ideal for candidates for Boat Master/Master of Code Vessels/Fishing Vessel certificates of competency wishing to serve as deck officers (other than Master) in emergency response and rescue (standby) vessels, seismic survey and oceanographic research vessels and who have not previously undertaken approved training in radar/electronic navigational systems.
The course is also suitable for other seafarers serving on ships of a limited size and requiring familiarisation or updating/refresher training in the use of radar and other electronic navigation systems.

What you'll learn

Training takes place in multi-function classrooms in the world-class Maritime Simulation Centre at Warsash Maritime School, where delegates will also use desktop simulators to undertake practical training in the use of a variety of electronic navigation aids.

Topics covered will include:

• Basic principles of coastal navigation
• Passage planning
• Use of radar and other electronic aids to navigation (commonly found on small vessels)
• During the course, there will be progressive assessment, including regular feedback during and after exercises.

This course has been approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) in accordance with the recommendations of the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB), and meets the requirements of the Workboat Code. Delegates who successfully complete the course will be issued with a certificate of completion.
