This five day course is suitable for dynamic positioning (DP) operators who have been unable to log 150 days of DP sea time in the five years since obtaining DP certificates.
The course focuses on the practical application of DP using class A DP simulators, enabling operators to update their knowledge of new technologies and procedures including ASOG, CAMO and TAM.
The course comprises a combination of theory and practical exercises on a DP class A simulator. Through a series of simulator exercises, students review operational planning, power management, weather observation, blackout recovery methods, DP failure mitigation, and other skills necessary to being an important member of the bridge team. Emphasis is placed on safe DP operations and handling various DP emergencies.
What you'll learn
The course features DP simulator exercises involving different vessels and types of operations, including DP system and vessel safe operational procedures, system alarm messages and DP system setup. Additionally, power, thruster, sensor and reference system failures are reviewed and safe operations tested. Simulator assessments are followed by an online test conducted by the Nautical Institute.
On successful completion of the course, students may apply to revalidate their DP operator licence for a further five years.
Prerequisites
Students should be licensed deck officers and be in possession of a DPO certificate, which might have expired. The course can be undertaken six months prior to expiry of a certificate.
