Course description
The course is developed in accordance with the Sections A/13 and B/13 of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) and Regulation VI/6, paragraphs 1-3, of the above Convention, based on IMO Model Course 3.27, and meets the standards of competence specified in paragraphs 1-5 and the table A-VI/6-1 of Section A-VI/6 of the STCW CODE.
This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to enhance the security of your ship and its crew. You will learn about the international and national regulations, roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders, types of security threats and risks, and the best practices to prevent and respond to them. You will also learn how to conduct security assessments, implement security measures, communicate effectively, and deal with emergencies.
Certification and approval
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of proficiency in ship security awareness. The course is approved by the Maritime Administration of Ukraine (IMO white list) on the syllabus "SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING FOR ALL SEAFARERS".
Delivery method
The course is delivered through an online learning platform and consists of lectures, videos, quizzes and case studies.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the purpose and scope of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and other relevant conventions and laws
- Identify the duties and obligations of the ship owner, operator, master, crew, port authorities, and other parties involved in ship security
- Recognize the common security threats and risks faced by ships and ports, such as piracy, terrorism, smuggling, stowaways, cyberattacks, etc.
- Apply the principles of risk management to assess the security level of your ship and its surroundings
- Implement appropriate security measures according to the ship security plan and the security level
- Communicate effectively with other crew members, port officials, security personnel, and external parties
- Deal with security incidents and emergencies in a calm and professional manner
- Report any security breaches or anomalies to the relevant authorities

This course is based on the following regulations and guidelines:
- The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
- IMO model course 3.27: Security Awareness Training for all Seafarers.
- BMP5: Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security. in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.
- IMCA - Security Measures and Emergency Response Guidance.
- IMO MSC.1/Circ.1334 Guidance to shipowners and ship operators, shipmasters and crews on preventing and suppressing acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships.
Entry requirements
This course is suitable for anyone who works on board a ship or in a port facility, regardless of their rank or function. It is also a mandatory requirement for seafarers who do not have designated security duties under the STCW Convention.
