Candidates for this course must have already successfully completed an approved STCW Basic Training course, have successfully demonstrated all related competencies, and have successfully completed either a USCG approved QMED-FOWT course or a QMED-Oiler course.

Please bring the following items when you report for class:

Closed toe shoes, or safety shoes, NO Sneakers or Athletic footwear

Any applicant who has successfully completed our QMED-Pumpman/Machinist (MIDATL-802) course within 1 year of application will satisfy:

The professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for a national rating endorsement as QMED – Pumpman/Machinist; AND
The Tanker Familiarization course requirements of 46 CFR 13.401(e)(1) for an original endorsement as Tankerman-Assistant DL; AND
Satisfy the Tankerman-Assistant course requirements of 46 CFR 13.609(a)(1) and Table A-V/1-1-1 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010 for an endorsement for Basic Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations.

The objective of this course is to provide the student with:

A. The necessary knowledge and technical information to enable successful completion of the QMED Pumpman/Machinist examinations consisting of subjects as detailed in 46 CFR Table 1 to §12.505(c) – Examination Subjects for QMED Ratings,

and:

B. The necessary knowledge and technical information to enable successful completion of the Tank Ship Familiarization (MIDATL-505), and should also enable candidates to serve on oil tankers in a capacity other than master, chief engineer officer, chief mate, or second engineer officer, and to perform specific duties and responsibilities related to those duties in connection with cargo and cargo equipment, provided that they are not immediately responsible for the loading, discharging care in transit or handling of cargo. The training includes basic safety and pollution prevention precautions and procedures, layouts of different types of oil tankers, types of cargos, their hazards and their handling equipment, general operational sequence and oil tanker terminology. The course takes full account of the annex to resolution 10 adopted by the International Conference on Training Certification of Seafarers, as amended.

Course syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention as amended Chapter V, Section A-V/1-1. This functional element provides the detailed knowledge to support the training outcomes related to the specification of minimum standard of competence in basic training for oil and chemical tanker cargo operations.
