Applicants who have successfully completed the Chief Mate/Master Assessments (MIDATL-121) Course must present completed Control Sheets for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

Upon successful completion of this course, candidates shall already have the experience and training for the Officer In Charge of a Navigational Watch of vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC) and successfully demonstrate all competency assessments of this course to satisfy the completion of STCW Deck Management Level assessment as set forth in Section A-II/2 and Table A-II/2 of the Standards for Training and Certification of Watchkeepers (STCW) Code certification as appropriate for the vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC) based upon their qualifying sea experience. Major competences topic areas are as follows:
- Plan and conduct navigation
- Plan a voyage and conduct navigation
- Determine and allow for compass errors
- Coordinate Search and Rescue Operations
- Establish watchkeeping arrangements and procedures
- Maintain safe navigation through the use of radar and ARPA and modern navigation systems to assist command decision making
- Forecast weather and oceanographic conditions
- Respond to Navigational Emergencies
- Maneuver and handle a ship in all conditions
- Plan and ensure safe loading, stowage, securing, care during the voyage and unloading of cargoes
