Description

Any applicant, who has successfully completed the Advanced Navigation (MIDATL-19) course, including successful demonstration of all practical assessments, will satisfy:

The Advanced Navigation training requirements for STCW certification as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC); AND
The practical assessments conducted in this course will be accepted as the equivalent of the following assessments from the National Assessments Guidelines for Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code: M-1-1A; M-1-1B; M-1-2G; M-1-2H; M-1-2I; M-1-3A; M-1-4A; M-2-1A; M-2-1B; M-2-1C; M-2-1D; M-2-1E; M-2-1F; and M-6-3A. Applicants who have successfully completed the course need not present completed “Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification; AND
The competences of Use of ECDIS to maintain the safety of navigation of Table A-II/1; and Maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making of Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code, as amended.

This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention as amended Chapter II, Section A-II/2. This functional element provides the detailed knowledge to support the training outcomes related to the Navigation at the Management Level. Additionally, students will gain knowledge of:

Plan a voyage and conduct navigation.

• Voyage planning and navigation for all conditions by acceptable methods of plotting ocean tracks, taking into account, e.g.:

1. restricted waters
2. meteorological conditions
3. ice
4. restricted visibility
5. traffic separation schemes
6. vessel traffic service (VTS) areas
7. areas of extensive tidal effects

• Routing in accordance with the General Provisions on Ships’ Routing
• Reporting in accordance with the General principles for Ship
• Reporting Systems and with VTS procedures

Determine position and the accuracy of resultant position fix by any means:

• Position determination in all conditions:

1. by celestial observations
2. by terrestrial observations, including the ability to use appropriate charts, notices to mariners and other publications to assess the accuracy of the resulting position fix
3. using modern electronic navigational aids, with specific knowledge of their operating principles, limitations, sources of error, detection of misrepresentation of information and methods of correction to obtain accurate position fixing

Determine and allow for compass errors:

• Ability to determine and allow for errors of the magnetic and gyro-compasses
• Knowledge of the principles of magnetic and gyro-compasses
• An understanding of systems under the control of the master gyro and a knowledge of the operation and care of the main types of gyro-compass
• Maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making
• Management of operational procedures, system files, and data, including:
  1. manage procurement, licensing and updating of chart data and system software to conform to established procedures
  2. system and information updating, including the ability to update ECDIS system version in accordance with vendor’s product development
  3. create and maintain system configuration and backup files
  4. create and maintain log files in accordance with established procedures
  5. create and maintain route plan files in accordance with established procedures
  6. use ECDIS log-book and track history functions for inspection of system functions, alarm settings and user responses
• Use ECDIS playback functionality for passage review, route planning, and review of system functions
