Any applicant who has successfully completed the Advanced Meteorology (MIDATL-18) course will satisfy the Advanced Meteorology training requirements of 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(iii) and 11.307(a)(3)(iii) for STCW certification as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 3000 GT or more AND 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(iii) and 11.313(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsement as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT.

The following practical assessments performed during this course have been determined to be equivalent of National Assessment Guidelines TASKs, as documented in NVICs 10-14 and 11-14 Tasks For Master or Chief Mate on Vessels of 3,000 GT or More (Management Level) and 500 GT or More and Less than 3,000 GT (Management Level): 7.1.A; 7.2.A; 7.3.A; 7.4.A; 7.4.B; and 7.4.C.

Applicants who have successfully completed this course need not present completed a “Record of Assessment” for these tasks in application for STCW certification.

This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention Chapter II, Section A-II/2. This functional element provides the detailed knowledge to support the training outcomes related to the Navigation at the Management Level. Students completing this course will have the knowledge, understanding, and have proficiency in forecast weather and oceanographic conditions. Additionally, students will gain knowledge of:

• Forecast weather and oceanographic conditions
• Ability to understand and interpret a synoptic chart and to forecast area weather, taking into account local
• Weather conditions and information received by weather fax
• Knowledge of the characteristics of various weather systems, including tropical revolving storms and avoidance of storm centers and the dangerous quadrants
• Knowledge of ocean current systems
• Ability to calculate tidal conditions
• Use all appropriate nautical publications on tides and currents
