Course Eligibility: The minimum expected entry requirements are for candidates holding OOW certificate of competency and is intended for those who are required to hold an ECDIS certificate.

Course Description - ECDIS Generic
The aims of the training are to equip the candidate with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch using electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), interfaced with other onboard equipment to maintain safety of navigation.The course is Intended for candidates requiring a stand-alone ECDIS certificate in accordance with Regulation II/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended (Manila Amendments).
Course Content - ECDIS Generic
On completion the candidate will have demonstrated competence to:
- use ECDIS to maintain a safe navigation watch as a part of effective bridge resource management. This objective is reflected in:
- Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code;
- The marine national occupational standards B02 ‘Maintain a navigational watch’ and B11 ‘Initiate the response to navigation emergencies’.
All deck officers (including yacht officers) applying for a new or revalidating a UK Certificate of Competency, are required to include an ECDIS certificate with their application. If an ECDIS certificate is not included with an application, the CoC will have the following limitation: "From 1 January 2017, this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS" (see also MIN 423).
The Master and all deck officers of UK Flagged vessels (including yachts) which have ECDIS as their primary means of navigation are required to have completed both generic and equipment specific ECDIS training. (see also MIN 442).
Other flag states have similar requirements, you are advised to check with them directly if you are unsure.
Course Description - Type Specific
The type-specific training course provides officers with the system knowledge required to use this ECDIS for watchkeeping in accordance with the regulations of STCW and the ISM Code. The guided course, with a duration of approx. 16 hours, covers the equipment familiarisation requirements of IMO Model Course 1.27 and MCA MIN 442 M+F for the functions and controls of the type specific ECDIS.
