We are proud to be a world-renowned centre of excellence for marine education and training. Established in 1861, we offer programmes across the whole spectrum of marine education and nautical sciences, including navigation, operations, marine and electrical engineering, communications and catering.

We cater for all levels of education and training from deck, engine and ET rating, maritime apprenticeships, all officer trainee programmes through to senior officer certificate and up to an honour degree level. We also provide an extensive range of short courses for the marine offshore markets.

Our highly experienced and knowledgable team have a wealth of industry experience, so they understand the needs of employers from a broad spectrum of maritime industries from marine to offshore sectors. We can tailor our training to the specific needs of employers and we pride ourselves on our ability to respond quickly to the legislative requirements and to meet the needs of the industries, companies and individuals we serve.

I did my 2nd Mates here in S.S in 1974/75. Later I did my Chief Mates in1977.Thereafter my Masters in 1981/82. The lecturers/tutors were a dedicated kind. The journey was not an easy one but the lecturers were always there to guide you. South Shields Marine School will always have a special place in my heart. I am always proud to say that I did my studies in South Shield Marine School. cheers.

I studied for my Chief Mates unlimited at South Shields Marine School. The SQA prep is excellent. They run a thorough and well planned course. There are lots of good resources available. Above all else the lecturers are engaging and always have time to answer your questions. However, the two week orals prep that they run after the SQA exams is not to the same standard. There were a myriad of lecturers which varied a lot in quality and the course generally lacked structure.

The only quality of the education is good however the food on campus ‘Sodexo’ is absolutely horrible. School needs to change catering facility asap to make the student experience a lot better.

Attending a short course with 7 others because of Covid-19 measures. There is a 2m demarcation everywhere and hallways are One-way. We use different stairs and entrances. Wipes and Hand sanitizer stations in every room and entrance
